How are the drivers for this graphic card??
Is ATI LInux driver good enough?? i'm not going to play games. just the aplications commonly used.
What about video out?? does it work??

I have an ati card and I can say that ati support for linux is lame at best. If you look around this forum for ati-drivers, you'll see what I'm talking about. If I were you, I'd try to get an nvidia card, and save yourself alot of trouble down the road. However, If all your interested in is normal desktop apps, and not using the x composite manager or anything fancy like that, then xorg's built in ati support should suit you fine, and give you trouble free performance. As for the video out, I can't help you, I'll leave that to someone else. _________________ "That question was less stupid; though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way."

If you're not playing games, it should be fine for desktop use, although as Sith_Happens says you won't be able to use the Composite extension in the newer versions of Xorg.

I think so, but I don't use it. Try searching the forums and/or Google (it doesn't have to be Gentoo specific information).

It can be very easy or very difficult, depending on how your system is setup, what hardware you have, and whether you're feeling lucky or not If you read the link in my sig, you'll find some installation instructions. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

i've read in the mailing list of gentoo that there's a problem using the ati proprietary drivers
using X then switching to console and then back to X does not work.
does this happens ins the latest driver version.
what other problems like this should i expect?? |

Depends on if you know what you are doing or not. All of the problems that people are reporting with the ATI Drivers I have not experienced. I have my ATI card functioning perfect. DGA works, OpenGL, etc. The GLXGEARS framerate is 1000fps then the NVIDIA card in my other PC and I can see the difference using Firefox and other apps.
Make sure you don't have framebuffer support turned on in the kernel and get the latest ati-drivers from the portage. |
