problems getting mail client to work

I am trying to get a gentoo box up and running for my new bride. I have it all working except for mail. I am using fetchyahoo to pull her yahoo mail. It is working fine, and the mail is sitting in /var/spool/mail/wife.

However, when I try to access the mail file via kmail or thunderbird, it does not work.

Kmail says: Transmission failed: Could not lock /var/spool/mail/wife (/var/spool/mail is 1777 and wife is 644)

Thunderbird says: unable to locate mail spool file?

What is going on here? I know this setup should work since it is working on my current laptop. So, I am very confused as to what is going on here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know in kmail you can tell it not to use lockfiles, and then it'll work.
