Ho una ATI 9000, ho aggiornato i driver agli ultimi usciti ma ora all'avvio di xdm lo schermo è tutto bianco sporco, poi pian piano si sfuma fino a diventare nero o_O roba assurda insomma ho guardato il log di Xorg
e mi dice:

quindi se anche il tuo lspci ti dice che la scheda è quella con quel chipset...
Semplicemente i drivers non fungono con la tua scheda !
E' abitudine di ATI fare questi scherzetti !!

Si, confermo...
Come ho appena protestato in un altro post analogo, anch'io sono un fortunato possessore di radeon 9000.
Dall'ultima relase del driver, tale scheda non è più supportata (guarda sul sito di Ati per avere conferma).
Per ora, l'unica cosa che puoi fare, è limitarti ad un

echo >=x11-apps/ati-drivers-extra-8.29.6 /etc/portage/package.mask
emerge -u ati-drivers
emerge -u ati-drivers-extra

e tutto dovrebbe tornare a funzionare.
Preparati, in ogni caso, a sostituire il driver closed source son quello open-source (trovi documentazione sia sul sito ufficiale di gentoo, sia sul wiki).
L'ho trovato un po' più lento, ma almeno un minimo funziona (scordati comunque, allo stato attuale, di usare XGL + compiz in maniera decente).
E poi c'è sempre l'opzione "cambiare scheda video"... Sad but true.
