Hi,
I'm new to Gentoo, and although most of what I want is now up and running I am still without sound.
Initially I forgot to configure the kernel with the proper support, but I have now recompiled and enabled ALSA support, and as well I have enabled particular driver for my card (I think...). I've clicked the box for

Intel i8x0/MX440, Sis, 7012, Ali 5455; NForce Audio; AMD768/8111

I have on board audio, and from the motherboard's website I have:

Realteck ALC655 6-Channel AC97 CODEC

It was suggested on an earlier post that the Intel driver is what I'm looking for.
At any rate, ALSA seems to find a device now, but no sound comes out! I've checked system and speaker volume and checked that the connections are good, but I still have no sound.
From Realtek I downloaded their driver support, and was going to install it just in case it worked. But it sensed that alsa was already in the kernel, and so there was an error in configure:
Code:

configure: error: You have built-in ALSA in your kernel.

I did install the alsa-utilities from the RealTek page, but still no sound. This is what mplayer tells me:

Any ideas on where I might go from here?

Thanks

Most likely your sound device is still muted. Use alsamixer to change the settings.

That would be my guess too. alsamixer is provided by alsa-utils, and I think emerging alsa-tools would be a good idea.

Success!
Thank you so much. I had a feeling that the problem is one of those obvious things, but I'm not very experienced with Linux and so I had no idea how to check for system muting and such. I had no idea that alsamixer was even a valid command.

So thanks again,
