I would like to uninstall kde, because I have taken a liking to (edit:)fluxbox. If I wanted something like kde, I would just boot into Windows. So, I would like to remove it because I imagine it takes up a lot of space (it took 4 hours to compile on my athlon xp 1500!!!). I typed "emerge unemerge kde". That didn't work, so I looked in /usr/portage/kde-base and tried all its parts individually. Then I tried uninstalling other programs and they all were giving me the same error! (edit:)The entire thing went like this:
Code: | # emerge unemerge kde
Calculating dependencies !!! Couldn't find match for unemerge; aborting |
However, I do in fact have kde installed. After it told me this, I opened up kde fine. Why can't I get rid of it!!! _________________ Matthew Hauck

Um...okaaaaay. That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Between this and your fonts question, may I suggest that you work a little bit on your troubleshooting? If you're having a problem with something, you need to provide details -- not just "it looks retarded" or "I like this, so I'm going to uninstall it" Please also post troubleshooting steps that you have already tried. These should include looking in your log files for relevant error messages, googling for said error messages, reading the man pages for the affected apps, etc.
This isn't meant to sound mean, but without enough decent information, folks can't help you find a solution.

Yes, I realize this. It was an honest mistake. I already realized my stupidity before you posted. I am sorry if I caused any confusion. I meant to type that I have taken a liking to fluxbox. _________________ Matthew Hauck

OK, fair enough. Regarding the unmerge error message you're getting, it's because you're using the unmerge syntax incorrectly. I'm away from my gentoo box at the moment, but I believe it should be:
Code: | emerge -u <package name> |
or
Code: | emerge --unmerge <pacakge name> |
Check the man page for emerge to make sure:
I realize it still references "emerge unmerge" on the web site in several places, but that's an older version of the syntax. A bug has been filed noting the discrepancy on the web site.

change "unemerge" to "unmerge"
Code: |
emerge unmerge --pretend kde
>>> These are the packages that I would unmerge:
kde
selected: 3.0
protected: none
omitted: none
>>> Packages in red are slated for removal.
>>> Packages in green will not be removed.
|
of course, remove the --pretend option to actually do this.
(I've kde installed as you can see and I didn't want to uninstall it by error. Just trying the command!! ) |

Yeah, I did the man and I saw that too. Oops! When I did "-u" it started downloading stuff, so I Ctrl-C'd out and tried "unmerge" and it worked like a charm. Thanks. _________________ Matthew Hauck

-u means update and not unmerge.
The shorthand for unmerge is -C
Huh?
Yeah, it's a big C. :p
The documentation needs some cleaning up.
Personally I think lowercase u for update and uppercase U for unmerge would have been good. Kind of like how we have -p for pretend and -P for prune. |

so does it look like you have to unmerge all of the kde packages individually?

I suppose because AFAIK 'kde' is just a dummy package for all the kde packages (= they all depend on it, so removing it removes the depending ones)
see you,
