No /dev/lirc[0-9] device when using lirc

I'm trying to set up a mythtv frontend using gentoo (been through Arch, Slackware, Debian, Fedora, Knoppmyth, in that order, and while Arch is my favorite, myth dies on it inexplicably)

Anyway, I emerged lirc with support for the atiusb driver (btw, emerge is almost as cool as pacman and abs, and with better pkg build scripting) and loaded the modules, but I don't have a /dev/lirc device, only /dev/lircd.

I have coldplug and hotplug running, and it seems to load all the proper modules.

Does anybody have any experience with this?

In the Gentoo setup Wiki for mythtv it says you need to set the :

LIRCD_OPTS="-d /dev/lircd"
in the /etc/conf.d/lircd file

I still can't get mythtv to show a live picture or the hauppauge grey remote to work!

But that's circular, because /dev/lircd is the device that lircd creates so clients can interface to it.

It also means I get nothing when I push a button on the remote. I'm using the niveus with the atiusb driver. I had this working just fine under arch, so I'm quite certain the hardware works.
