Hello.
I have sound, via alsa, and it works. I can hear sounds in programs like GAIM.
Nevertheless, when I try to use Gnome's Volume Contrl, it gives this error:

"Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found"

I looked around, and people suggested I ran gst-register-0.8 , but I got this:

Code:

...
Added plugin videocrop with 1 feature.
Added plugin volume with 1 feature.
Added plugin videoscale with 1 feature.
Added plugin playondemand with 1 feature.
Added plugin videorate with 1 feature.
Added plugin synaesthesia with 1 feature.
Added plugin multipart with 2 features.
Added plugin alphacolor with 1 feature.
Added plugin videobox with 1 feature.
Added plugin interleave with 2 features.
Added plugin gstdataprotocol with 0 features.
Segmentation fault

I also tried to login as root, and I got these error windows in the beggining:

1 - The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".
Details: Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0'
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

2- The Volume Control applet appears to have died unexpectedly.
Do you want to reload this applet?

3- There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error mesage was:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred.

Can anyone help?

I've had similar problems in KDE. I managed to fix it by changing the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer (and what they link to) to be 666, then restarting KMix.

It'd be nicer to add them to the audio group and make them group r/w - at least one was 600 and owned by root:root.
