I've got a Promise IDE controller (/proc/pci says it's a 20268; don't know if that's the chipset or what). It's got one drive on it just now, an IBM "deathstar" 120XP. This appears to be working in UDMA5 mode as listed by hdparm -i.
Code: |
/dev/hde:
Model=IC35L120AVVA07-0, FwRev=VA6OA52A, SerialNo=VNC602A6C931KG
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=52
BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=1863kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=241254720
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
AdvancedPM=yes: disabled (255) WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: ATA/ATAPI-5 T13 1321D revision 1: 2 3 4 5

I have a problem getting data onto it. I have an existing 120XP deskstar on the motherboard controller, I simply try to copy the root filesystem of the existing disk to the new disk "cp /data/* /data2". The copy stops after the new drive is only 7% full. I am testing the drive before committing new data to it, BTW.
Is this typical of a hard drive failure? The system load ( from "w") immediatley goes to 2.00 even though CPU usage is negligble. Now (after the cp has been running for 10 days!) the usage is 11.00 with little CPU usage. I get an ugly sound from the box from time to time, but this could be any one of the three drives in the box.
Also, I have been unable to create a Reiser FS on this drive, but ext2/3 work OK.
Oh, it's an lvm volume, but so is the existing, working drive (different volumes). I haven't tried as a normal device, actually, but I suppose I could.
To me, it looks like a drive failure, but as this is the only drive on the controller it might not be. does anyone know where I can look (system logs?) for info, or any diagnostics I can turn on to get more info? As a last resort I will take the drive out and bung it in a windows PC and see if there are any diagnostics available on the IBM web site.

Just thought I'd update to say it was a drive failure. I removed the drive (buggering my uptime; hmp!) and stuck it in a windows box, and ran the IBM Smart Explorer (or whatever it's called) software, which reported that failure was imminient.
Now I've got to *pay* to send it back to the retailer!

I have a promise 20265 and it works fine. The latest kernels (2.4.20+) should support that card without a problem, assuming you don't have bad hardware.
IBM has a program called Drive Fitness Test that will check out all the different aspects of the drive to determine whether or not something is bad/not. You can download it under Linux and use DD to copy the image to floppy if you don't have windows installed.
I almost forgot, here is the link to it (BTW, this works on non-IBM drives as well, it just doesn't perform quite as many tests):
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm
Also, can you switch the two drives (putting them on different controllers) and then determine whether or not it is the controller card that is bad.
