A few days back, I logged into GNOME and I received a number of errors saying that Nautilus had crashed. One popped up after the other, and after about 8 of these they stopped, but now my desktop doesn't work. By that I mean that I can't get the right-click menu to come up on my desktop, no icons appear on the desktop, and my wallpaper settings are not saved from one login to the next.

I've tried to move all the $HOME/.gnome* directories and have them recreated, but that did little else than remove my Mozilla and Term launchers from the panel.

Any other ideas?

Have you tried running nautilus from a terminal window to see the output? You might have a library change or something that's broken nautilus. If you see anything about missing library or somesuch then try a revdep_rebuild

GTK complains a couple times about missing stuff from my theme, but otherwise Nautilus works properly. Furthermore, running Nautilus brings those icons back, and I can right-click on the desktop. Hmmm. I believe that somehow GNOME has decided to stop trying to start Nautilus on startup. I would assume one way to fix this is to add it to the startup programs in the default session. Any other ideas?

I have now found a trend. This is on a laptop, and if I start GNOME on battery power, it starts up just fine. No problems at all. If I start GNOME under AC power, the symptoms above occur. This is only with one user on the machine.

Does this ring bells for anybody?
