I am currently running a small development server on my works network. Later on this server will run as a small webserver.

The server does not have a dns entry, so I access it per ip number, which works fine for some things like ssh. The server is set up with "mikan" as its hostname.

However when I try to access http://ip number/mediawiki/ (I'm using the actual ip number, but or concealing it here) on the server from windows XP machines the browser tries to do dns lookups for mikan.domainname.dk (again the domain name is concealed), and then fails to load the page as there is no DNS entry in its servers for that page.

What causes this behaviour? It seems to be only XP machines exhibiting this behaviour. Win98 machines does not attempt to get the pages from mikan.domainame.dk, rather it just uses the ip I specify in the adress bar without doing a DNS query (apparently). I'd prefer not having to set up a dns entry for this machine, as I am not in control of the DNS servers and would like not to have to go through the registration procedures for this machine which is unlikely to need a domain name anywhere soon.

add the entry to your hosts file. in windoze this is likewise to /etc/hosts, but right now i dont recall where it resides. i think in c:\windows or c:\windows\system.

Thank you for the replies.

Not setting servername in apache2.conf was what caused the problem.

I set servername to the ip adress, and now my webapps are working.
