I've searched around in the forums, and found topics about slocate running on a daily basis to update its database. I've already checked my crontab and the cron folders, but nothing there.

My problem is, the lockups occur regularly every 3 hours. Then, the CPU (Athlon64 3000+) is completely busy (I can't even type in any terminal or move the mouse pointer in Xorg!) and there is hard disk activity all the time. Sometimes, it finishes after about 10 minutes, but sometimes it locks up for two hours, just to begin again an hour later.

Because I'm not able to type in any terminal, I can't determine which process causes this activity.

Does someone has any clue what process can cause such a heavy load on the system? :(

Are you connected to the net at that time?
If so, are you running a firewall app like guarddog?

What's in messages?

It might be an idea to install sys-apps/smartmontools
"control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.)" could be you have something really weird with a disk..

Yes, via another Linux router. SSH is normally disabled on my machine, so I do not suspect that anyone has cracked my machine, since my passwords are not easy to guess (the important ones also contain special characters) and my world is up to date. This also happens if there is no active network connection (neither LAN or WLAN).

/var/log/messages contains the following entries made during the last busy period (13:05 to about 14:10 german time):

Check /var/log/messages or the equivalent log depending on your logger, to see what it says around the time of the spikes in activity.

EDIT: Thanks...

Check your cron.hourly directory. Is slocate set to run every hour or every few hours?

Nope, there are no cronjobs for any user except the cron.daily, cron. weekly etc, but these folders don't contain any scripts to run :-/

I'm suspecting pdflush to be the source of evil, since many others have problems with it, too. Will investigate this further...
