Eh guys, i'm looking for some alternatives to Mozilla Firefox since i think Firefox is still too ... "overloaded". I also did a test. I followed the superlight-kde tutorial and installed Konqueror with some other programs. Now i noticed, that Firefox takes about 10 MB Ram while Konqueror just takes about ~6. Don't understand me wrong, I just like compares.

Since i'm a fluxbox user I don't really like KDE, so i wanted to know if emerging kdebase bloats the system up or if KDE interferes in the rest of the system.

When i searched the forum for equivalent threads i found one where somebody said that emerging mozilla (full) without irc, mail etc. is as fast as firefox. Has anyone tried this out? By the way, how can i say portage not to compile the other plugins? Emerge mozilla shows me this:

yes, i think firefox is unstable.

i think mozilla without irc, mail, etc. is much faster than firefox. that's what i use when i'm not using elinks.

your current use flags look okay. they must've taken out the irc part of mozilla, so it's no longer an option.

But you don't know any other alternatives, don't you? I would wish me a browser fast as links -g but with better website-appearence.

there's galeon or epiphany which some people claim are faster, but i think it's the same as using the stripped down mozilla (they use the same html rendering engine). you might try dillo, but it's not much better than links -g. there's also w3m, which is a text browser that can display images.. pretty trippy.

try opera it's very faster, light and block really spy answer more than firefox or mozilla do. it is independant about lib( no need kde, gnome or other). opera doesn't support video mplayer plugin ( for video asf,mov,wmv,avi etc...) like do mozilla or firefox so if you don't need multimedia opera is the best (flashplayer is ok), instead i think mozilla still better with multimedia.

opera is free-as-in-beer. You can pay for it, and it displays text adds if you don't. That's really its only problem though, fine peice of software...

I tried it out, it's a really fast browser but the representation is as bad as in links -g. There's another browser, called amaya with just 8 mb, but i'm getting a compile error.

I mean it can't display div-container rightly. For example, try www.absinthe182.com in Firefox and then in Dillo. Can you now see the difference?

Coin... FF takes only 10 megs of RAM?! That must be a record low...

Konqueror actually takes more RAM, it just preloads an instance. IIRC there's a launcher that lets you do the same with Mozilla.

Edit: Perhaps you'd like Skipstone? There's a ~arch masked ebuild that works with mozilla 1.7.x...

Firefox is my main browser. I do suggest trying mozilla without any of the mail/calendar/etc. Its supposed to be fast. i like Firefox cause it only takes 14 MB of RAM
