PostPosted: Sat Apr 11, 2009 8:40 pm    Post subject: Report violations, duplicates, misplaced posts, etc. Reply with quote

This will allow an easy method of contacting all moderators at one time.
  • Users:
    • If you spot what you believe to be a duplicate post, please post a link to it here. In addition, include a link to what is being duplicated.
    • If you find a post you think belongs in a different forum, let us know.
    • Avoid multiple reports of spam:
      • If a user's posts are all spam, report the user, not the posts.
      • Review this thread after submitting a report. Please delete your report if someone beat you to the punch.
    • Any other post that you think requires moderation (violations of Guidelines, broken BBcode, etc.).

  • Moderators:
    • Please delete posts after you've addressed them.
Thanks in advance.

Reason: Looks kinda bot-ish to me

Looks like a spam magnet to me. I expect to see spam posts for properties in Turkey from new users any time now.

Maybe I'm too wait and see in my old age.

Reason: Technically there's nothing wrong with this one, but it hits uncanny valley for me. It is also a necro-bump by a long term (though not very active) member... Kinda feels like a stolen account, though I don't have any way to verify it.
Dunno, I guess just watch for now.

Reason: Wie kann man diesen User auf Ignore stellen?

Moderator note:

Translated german text with DeepL: "How can I put this user on ignore?"

Moderator response:

Hello arfe,

the easiest method is not to read any threads or posts from this user.

Another option is to violate our forum rules (*) again - especially 8 or 9 or 10 - and then get banned.

If you violate number 16 of our forum rules again, you will also be banned again.

Ignoring mails from our admins and mods are also helpful to get banned.

[Also, I notice that the user's e-mail address has marketing as an obvious substring. That is not quite ban-worthy on its own, but is highly suspicious. -Hu]
The user also has a prior post from April 7th that is mostly necro garbage. --pjp

[We have access to the forum's notification tools, but administrator privileges do not automatically sign us up for notifications on user changes. Thus, it's good for someone to actively set a watch on suspect content. Sometimes we do this on our own, but it never hurts to have observant users call out suspicious activity we might have missed. -Hu]

User: pjp
Topic: emerge usage that is confusing
Post: post 8843240
Reason: That's really getting off topic and it's really annoying to see even administrators buying into it. It makes a bad impression rules/guidelines are not for everyone. I would push back even further, but I'm not buying further into it.

p.s. if you want to discuss it, maybe split the thread.

EDIT (pjp): I did consider splitting it due to the number of posts on the subject, but it is directly related to the original question. "Would this usage be correct?" And that included the use of --with-bdeps=y. Subsequent discussion on whether to use that feature or not, and any related problems or considerations seem to me to be very on topic. --pjp, 2024-10-18

I think you could take two routes here. The route you took speaks a ton.

Reason: irresponsible post in a support thread

Looks like the poster removed its response ( I do saw it ) and left only the quote intact. So no action required anymore, right? -- Banana

It is not up to me to suggest any correctional measures.

[Moderator note: If a post only consists of a quote from a previous post and does not contain any text of its own, I consider such a post to be pointless and have therefore sent it to dustbin. -- pietinger]

I apologize for forgetting the saga that is Asturm/Genstorm, a short search reminded me of all of his trolling, bullying and demeaning posts, even a thread he started for the purpose of trolling another member. There are years worth of consistent content. Disappointing really, because he occasionally has a very lucid, explanatory, and helpful post mixed in.

Sometimes quoting a post by itself is a chance for the quoted poster to reflect upon their post. The quoted content and much more is/was deserving of being moved to OTW or the Dustbin.

If the current mods are ok with the continued demeanor, especially towards new members, it is what it is.

I will do my best to remember to whistle on past these trainwrecks.

Moderator announcement: There is a difference between an unfriendly/rude post and an insulting post. In the latter case, moderation intervenes immediately. If a user has made several unfriendly posts, we moderators also intervene - by trying to clarify this via a PN. If someone wants to argue with someone else, then they should also use a PN. The moderation team will not tolerate any public disputes in our forum. Or, as my grandfather said over 50 years ago: "I don't care who started it - I'll finish it!" I'm assuming these are the last two posts I / we need to read ...

pietinger, this is no dispute. This is a character assassination by some OTW leftover that I can't simply ignore. And it is at this point irrelevant if their utterances are the result of cultural differences or some longstanding grievance.

For better or worse, the report thread is public, and it is the official avenue to communicate to moderators about a need for action. The report thread itself does not provide a report function, either, and I did not go through the trouble of emulating one when I called out another "irresponsible post". And yes, the other half looks like a response - I'm human.

Please don't take your personal grudge into the moderators garden. Your post is by all means inappropriate, no matter the history. You have two options, either move on or leave. Everything else is pathetic and will ultimately lead to results you won't like either.

To comment a little on asturm's behavior: it's easy to criticize the one who does the job, it's hard to do the job. Please understand that it's really frustrating to explain one thing over and over again, especially for the one doing the job to the one criticizing. A certain amount of tolerance is required towards those people. And I don't see anything disrespectful from his side. Just a display of frustration. And however hard for some to acknowledge, a genuine effort to clarify the matter.

And last but not least, no user deserves you invading their thread to try to get back at someone. It's in violation of multiple rules and guidelines and totally useless in this thread. The correct way would have been to report what you found inappropriate and let the responsible people handle the matter.

Note to asturm: I appreciate your effort to clarify the matter and in the same time you don't need to get into such discussions. If the response does not indicate the user needs more information to understand and what that information is, but rather argues their own opinions, explain once is enough. Explaining further is pointless. It'll only cost you time, effort and nerves nothing can make up for.

When a moderator (or administrator) makes a mistake, all the users in this forum scream; when a Gentoo developer makes a mistake, the whole world screams.

Yes, both are in a prominent position due to their commitment. But this is even more true for our Gentoo developers. Can mistakes happen? Yes, because we are human beings and not robots.

On the other hand, everyone who works for Gentoo is also a role model. When I look at other Gentoo developers who are active (*) in our forum, you can immediately see how competent, friendly and understanding they are.

This means that our Gentoo developers are doubly exposed. I firmly believe that every person who exposes themselves needs special protection.

Of course, it is the moderator's job to prevent personal attacks on all users. I am only a little more sensitive when it comes to our developers. That means: If I write that I don't want to read any more posts, then that means that I will interpret further attacks on our developers as a request for a ban.

*) I am very happy about the activity of @sam_, @Ionen, @Nowa, @Juippsi, @toralf and @eschwartz (in no particular order). Fortunately, previous developers are also active, such as @grknight and @Genone. To me, they are all shining examples for the Gentoo community.
