USB/Firewire hell

Hi everyone. I managed to install Gentoo and everything is quite ok...but there are still things that bother me:

1. I happen to own a medium class digital still camera (Samsung), which connects to computer via usb. As you all know samsung does provide support for them cameras...but only for Windoze :evil:

So I don't really know where even to begin, any tips for me of some useful URL?

2. Well after I bought my digi camera I had to buy digital video camera

and to make my life even harder it's connects to computer via firewire...I did include firewire support in kernel, but again Me + kernel + firewire is A BAD combination, so any of you have dv camera working on gentoo?

3. I hope you are not bored yet...

My last problem is my mouse...god know how I wanted to throw it from the window, but I still didn't. It's usb mouse and I DID read your short article about how to get usb mouse to work...but still no luck...I did include all needed in kernel for full usb support and I do see correct things from dmesg:

1. As far as digital cameras go, you might want to try out gPhoto and gPhoto2, each with their own camera support. For my gPhoto worked fine whereas I couldn't get it working in gPhoto2 (Kodak DC3400 camera). You might also try looking into getting a Sandisk CF or Smartmedia reader that is supported under Linux, they run around $20 and you don't have to go through the hassle.

2. Don't know anything about firewire, none on my laptop. Sorry.

3. Did you compile in Input Core support and Mouse Support under it?

2) firewire isn't too hard to get up -- it's just _what_ to do after you get the system to recognize your device that is the tricky part...

One thing (and it may or may not help) -- I think that XF86Config is case-sensitive with regards to the Protocol option -- try "IMPS/2" Also, make sure that you dont have a Mouse1 already defined. I found that my pointing stick/touchpad combo was defined as Mouse1, so I named the usb mouse "Mouse2" and changed the CorePointer value near the end of the XF86Config file.

Also, what happens if you do a "cat /dev/usbmouse" at a terminal?

thnx. But I was wondering that what kind of program would be similar to Adobe Premiere? I want to transfer video+audio from camera and make microDVD of of my home videos. Any suggestions?

If you camera is not Mass-Storage-Class compatible take a look at:

There will be also an ebuild: emerge gphoto2

Firewire works fine with my notebook, but I haven't a digital camcorder only a Firewire HD ...

that just means the kernel doesn't know what it is.

u should still be able to run gphoto2 and tell it what your camera is. check out their webpage for the models they support
