I am installing gentoo onto a Shuttle SS40 machine. I have trouble getting the WinTV card to work, så please help me :-)

Notice below that no /dev/v* exists; that is, no /dev/video, no /dev/video0, no /dev/v4l/*...

The funny thing is - "it worked yesterday" (really!) :-)

I don't quite know how it might have worked yestrday for you but not today.
Question for you is:
How are you loading the bttv module?

Thank you for input. I load it via /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.

emilie root # cat /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
# /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6: kernel modules to load when system boots.
#
# Note that this file is for 2.6 kernels.
#
# Add the names of modules that you'd like to load when the system
# starts into this file, one per line. Comments begin with # and
# are ignored. Read man modules.autoload for additional details.

# For example:
# 3c59x
i2c-core
i2c-dev
i2c-algo-bit
i2c-algo-pcf
i2c-proc
msp3400
tuner
tvaudio
tvmixer
videodev
bttv

Ok..
thats good..
Here is the deal..
you need to specify the card & tuner model # when you load the bttv modules.

For eg. I am using ATI TV wonder ...
and I think my tuner is 44 and card number is 64
hence my line in the kernel-2.6 is:

bttv tuner=44 card=64

To figure out what your tuner & card numbers are look in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/
under there you have two files CARDLIST.bttv & CARDLIST.tuner
they will assist you in setting up your bttv module correctly.

So basically you just need to specify correct options to get your bttv module working correctly.

As a side note: One of my other TV tuner cards, I actually had to pull out the card, take down the chip number and then do the search for it to figure out the correct settings. Also first just try getting the video working once its working you can try different tuners etc to see which gives you better result.
Moreover try all this as root first, because /dev/video & /dev/rtc and stuff will need to have their permissions adjusted before you can use em as regular user. As root permissions won't be an issue. Although keep in mind this is a security risk. :o

Did it work yesterday with the modules loaded using your current /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6? or did you manually load the modules?

I only have bttv (after the i2c stuff) in my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 and the other modules are loaded automatically.
