I compiled gnome last night after I installed gentoo, then this morning I followed the directions and updated everything and then "startx".
It came back with
Fatal server error, cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices.
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server "0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I'm still completely new to gentoo and have no idea what to do.
Where can I figure out mroe abut framebuffer and how it effects gnome, what should I do now?

*sigh*
I followed the directions!! when I tried to do x -configure (which told me my mouse probably wasn't set right which I knew, but figured I could fix later once I got into the GUI, which I'm far more comfortable using).
then
# X -config /root/xorg.conf.new which gave me the exact same result as startx did

delete new config from /root
than as root:
Code:

# X

then copy the config from /root to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
than as user:
Code:

cd /home/your_user
echo gnome-session > .xinitrc
startx

Do you have an nvidia card? I have an older nvidia card, and I wasn't able to use the framebuffer driver.

However, I was able to use the nvidia kernel and glx drivers just fine. Only catch is that I was only able to get the 1.0.6111 drivers working.

First, edit your '/etc/portage/package.mask' file:
Code:

>media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111
>media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6111

Then try emerging those two files:
[code[
emerge -v nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx
[/code]

You'll need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file so that it uses the driver 'nvidia' instead of the slow 'nv'. You'll also want to disable the 'dri' module.

See if that helps.

If you don't have an nvidia card...try to find a non-framebuffer driver and see if that works better.
