Brief explanation: I have a samba server on a LAN; None of the DNS servers on the lan refer to the server.

Here's my configuration:

Code:

[global]
workgroup=westend
netbios name=muster
server string=WESTEND Computer %h
debug level=1
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 50
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
local master = no
domain master = no
dns proxy = no
directory security mask = 0700
create mask = 0764
follow symlinks = no
force directory mode = 755
fstype = Samba
security mask = 0000
show add printer wizard = no

[homes]
   comment = Home Directories
   browseable = no
   writable = yes
   valid users = %S
   create mode = 0664
   directory mode = 0775

The issue I'm running into is that none of the win32 boxes (win-2000 and
win-xp) are seeing the gentoo box. I thought that samba was supposed to
announce its presence and that the winblow$ world would see it
automatically. Maybe I've blown the configuration.

Again, the DNS servers do not specifically refer to this system.

Is there something I'm missing that will get this box announcing its
presence as \\MUSTER?

Many thanks!

Hey just a point really, you might get a better response if this was in the networking section of the boards instead of the "Installing Gentoo" section.

As for your problem, see if windows picking up the samba server in the system log, see which system is acting master browse, might state if they had an election to determine who should be, if it's on of the clients then you should be able to set the samba server to be the master browse server.
