gentoo liveCD on a Netra computer with another OS?

Some coworkers of mine have an old netra SPARC system apparently with the original OS installed. They have lost the root password and need to recover it. Can a gentoo live CD change the root password on a foreign OS? Or find one on a current installation? I believe the target OS may be Solaris(I haven't seen this thing, we only go by vague descriptions)
