I am trying to emerge OpenOffice, but it is failing with the following error
checking whether and how to use Xinerama... yes, with static linking
checking X11/extensions/Xinerama.h usability... no
checking X11/extensions/Xinerama.h presence... no
checking for X11/extensions/Xinerama.h... no
configure: error: Xinerama header not found.
!!! ERROR: app-office/openoffice-1.1.4 failed.

If you want more eyecandy you can emerge openoffice-ximian instead. It's the same but uses gtk+.
