output of background/remote processes

I'm currently using ssh and screen to 'spy' on my home server (no keyboard, no monitor,) to see what's going on on an 'emerge -u world.'

But I was wondering if there's another/easier way to do it. Can I ssh to the server, 'deattach' the session and keep emerge running on the server without using screen?
