Hi,
I've got the same problem.. not sure what my chip is.. whether it's an Winchester or Newcastle core, cpuinfo won't give you any help. The serial number on the cpu should help you.. not checked mine since I don't really want to remove the fan.
Here is my cpuinfo anyways, the clock speed is lowered due to powernow.
Code:

bash-2.05b$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

That's my Winchester 3200 overclocked by 0.1 GHz. To find out what you have:
Is it Socket 939? If no you don't have a Winch.
If yes, does it have 512 K L2 cache? If yes it's a Winchester.
That is, unless AMD changed something, but I think I would've noticed.

All socket 939 3000+ and 3200+ processors are winchester

All socket 754 3000+ and 3200+ processors are not.
