Is reiser4 really worth all the trouble / lack of stability? I'm an average desktop user, I'm not running mission-critical servers or anything like that, but something that crashes often is obviously not worth extra speed. Is reiser4 worth it? |

Well, the question that needs to be answered is:
how much are the things reiser4 provides worth to you? Namely, do you have a problem with the performance of the currently time-tested filesystems?
If you really dont have any problems with the likes of reiser3 or ext3, then there is not much of a point to upgrading at this time. Even on a desktop system, I would not take even a small chance on data integrity if I could help it. |

The total cpu usage per amount of disk i/o is the same yet the peak cpu usage is higher and the throughput faster. The problem with this is that while it may increase disk i/o speed it also impacts interactivity adversely and is not so good with low latency applications. In terms of pure throughput, yes it is faster, but the speed gains are offset by worse desktop behaviour. The lower spec your machine is and the faster your disk(s) are the more obvious this disadvantage seems to be. This is a revolutionary fast filesystem, but for the moment it is suited to servers, not desktops. Hopefully this will improve. |
