Hello, I need a USB to ETHERNET device compatible with gentoo. I will be using my gentoo computer as a server, so wireless will (probably) not be an option. |

I've used the Linksys USB100TX extensively under Gentoo. It's not that fast compared to a PCI adapter, but it works fine for the most part.
If you're using it for a server why aren't you using a PCI card? The reliability and speed will be much greater than through USB. _________________ Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.

I did get a PCI card. It was from the "interface cards" on the newegg section. The card was never autodetected from linux, wasn't built into the kernel, driver never compiled, dos drivers didn't autodetect nor did doing it manually. In dos, which is the farthest I got, I usually get a "pci card" or "interface card not found".
If you cuold help, i'd be great. Thanks. |

(A) You're using Gentoo. Of COURSE you'll have to configure it yourself. and (B) Don't buy a Generic; they're problematic. _________________ Gentoo: Stage3 w/ NPTL & udev, gcc 3.4.4 full rebuild

If you want to try to get your current card working, then the thing that matters is its chipset. What does Code: | lspci | grep -i eth | have to say about what it is? _________________ Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.

It plain does nothing. I also tried net-config, nothing. Tried it without dhcp, nothing. It just plain won't detect. I bet getting a new ethernet adapter is an option? I don't mind. |

If the card isn't showing up in the output of lspci then odds are it's dead. |

Aha! I think I get it now. My PCI bridge is dead. ISA ethernet cards may be the solution, even though they are pretty old. Does anyone know where to get these?
Thanks! |

Nothing shows up in lspci at all?
I did have a motherboard once where the pci bridge wasn't compatible with linux. It would give me a "No pci bus found" warning during kernel bootup. |

Crazy. I'd replace the motherboard if at all possible. _________________ Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.

Code: | "good" + "isa card" = ERROR: Invalid function |
Good luck even finding one. I haven't seen an ISA nic in something like 10 years.
Just buy a new motherboard. _________________ Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.
