Had Gnome running fine until I decided to install the ati-drivers for my Radeon 9200 and use fglrxconfig to configure it. Now when I try to run X I get this error
Code: | (WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found
Fatal server error:
Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices |

I am interested that you arrive at precisely the same "Fatal server error" message as I have, except that that you managed a little flirt with a working GUI (Gnome) before things went wrong.
In my case, I had a command-line only Gentoo (no X!), and then tried to install one using "emerge kde"
Now - what is it with framebuffers? Does anyone ever need them? When should one use them? Are they mandatory.
Xfree86, now replaced by Xorg, is a geek area exceptiional! I have been finding reading Xorg config stuff hard going, and I still don't know if it is misdirected effort.
