Can't compile gentoo-source or vanilla-sources

I'm using gentoo 2004.3 x86 dvd-r to install gentoo with... everything goes perfectly fine until I try to compile the kernel, wetehr it be manually or using genkernel.. this is the error I get..

ERROR:Failed to compile the "modules" target...

I don't have the full log becuase I have no way of getting the other PC onto the net.

Im using ext2 and ext3 filesystems, they both have been enabled in the kernel, I've tried using different kernel sources... And i've re-done the entre install from scratch about 10 times now... i REALLY don't want to have to install mandrake again..

more specific error info is required to answer your question. and most important is what are the very first error messages in compilation log?
