Hi... after quite a bit of fiddling (and a kernel change), I've finally got ati-drivers working. Except for one minor problem... when I do startx, the monitor blanks out, and the machine freezes.

Here's the last few lines of Xorg.0.log:

Code:

(II) Module ddc: vendor="X.org Foundation"
        compiled for 6.8.1.904, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7
(II) Loading sub module "i2c"
(II) LoadModule: "i2c"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/modules/libi2c.a
(II) Module i2c: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 6.8.1.904, module version = 1.2.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7
(II) fglrx(0): I2C bus "DDC" initialized.
(II) fglrx(0): ATI Video BIOS revision 9 or later detected
(II) fglrx(0): Connector Layout from BIOS --------
(II) fglrx(0): Connector0: DDCType-1, DACType-0, TMDSType--1, ConnectorType-2
(II) fglrx(0): Connector1: DDCType-2, DACType-1, TMDSType-0, ConnectorType-3
(**) fglrx(0): MonitorLayout Option:
        Monitor1--Type AUTO, Monitor2--Type AUTO

(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.
(II) fglrx(0): DDC detected on DDCType 2 with Monitor Type 0
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) fglrx(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.

And that's it, then the machine freezes. I'm thinking this isn't a problem with the frequency settings, as you'd still be able to Ctrl+Alt+Bksp out of X. Maybe my monitor is faulty?

I'm not sure if this was the right forum for this post, but I think it's more a hardware issue than a GUI issue.

<bump />

Sorry, but I'm still having this problem. I've tried multiple monitors, but nothing seems to work. It's pretty much impossible to figure out what's really wrong, as the logs aren't updated. I've tried using both the in-kernel and in-driver agpgart drivers, and still nothing. So I'm thinking this is simply due to crappy drivers from ATI....

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't use ati-drivers, and see if it works. unmerge if you have emerged them.

Those are only for 3D acceleration, and with latest 2.6 kernel and latest xorg, I think you don't need them at all for 3D acceleration either.

No matter what kernel and xorg version you are using, you should be fine without them, unless you try to play any open-gl game.

So,
(1) Make sure that you choose ATI chipset in character device section, while configuring the kernel and agpgart ect.
(2) don't emerge ati-drivers, unmerge if you already have them.
(3) Remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf (let X do its autodetection, you can generate it later on using 'X -configure', xorg.conf generated by ati-drivers is not good)

Now see if your monitor works.

One more thing. Is it a deskto or a laptop? because when I emerged ati-drivers last time, it didn't have support for ATI Radeon 320M (the mobile Radeon for laptops)

It's a desktop, with a Radeon X700 Pro (PCIe)... I think I tried using the built-in Radeon drivers initially, and they didn't work either. But I managed to finally get the 2004.3 amd64 livecd working with my motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI), so I've been trying to reinstall as amd64 instead of x86. I'll reply when I get everything working, about the videocard status.

Thanks for the help. ^_^
