I've emerge Gnome, no errors, and installed it according to the docs. However, when I startx, I get the splash screen, which seems to display the first 2 icons (on the splash). It suddenly displays a black screen with horizontal flashing gray bars on the top and bottom of the screen. I can also see the mouse cursor, and it responds. I can also ctrl-alt-backspace out of X.
Information that may be relevant: I'm using the latest ATI drivers with the latest (working) Xorg. KDE starts just fine, and displays none of these symptoms. I'm not using Composite, either.
Any ideas?
EDIT: As an added bonus, I've also b0rked KDE, which errors out with something like "screen ' ' cannot be initialized." I'll post the actual error later, when I get a chance |

Also, twm loads just fine, so it really isn't a problem with Xorg. |

Also, why would gnome call for 'sh: kde-config'? seems rather odd... Could it be that i'm using the qt-gtk engine?
for my error message look near the bottom of this text file: http://www.crache.org/up/files/kdeaddons.txt |

Hm, I just ran into this on one box, too. It works for other users on the same box, though. I think (thought?) I deleted all the files Gnome would cough about, like gconf stuff in /tmp, all the .gconf, gconfd, .gnome* directories etc. etc. Still I get two flashing bars (guess that's the default panel and windowlist bar), then, after some seconds, I'm left with the background kdm originally set up, and a mouse pointer. _________________ "Failure is not an option!"
