I just finished installing gentoo 2.6.10r6 on an x86 machine. I followed the manual to a 'T' and learned a few things. After unmounting the livecd and rebooting, grub loaded a whole bunch of stuff, I logged in under the user i created (not root), and I tried to 'emerge xorg'. Apparently, I've lost my ability to access the internet as all the mirrors were timing out. I tried to ping google to no avail. Perhaps it is DNS? Perhaps I need to reconfigure my host (rightnow its just localhost)? I am running the genkernel.

I realize I may be leaving out information you may need to help me. If so, please tell me what you want and where I might find it, as I'm completely new to this -- still it's extremely gratifying to actually *work* for an OS.

Thank you in advance for your time,

Taylor

Are you running DHCP? If not, did you set your gateway in /etc/conf.d/net? should look something like this:
gateway="eth0/192.168.0.1"

Also, an easy way to see if it's a DNS issue see if you can ping a public IP address. If you can, you're obviously able to "get out" through your gateway. Then, try to ping something simple like "www.google.com"...If you can't, you're not resolving and it would be DNS.

I went ahead and changed my /etc/conf.d/net to reflect DHCP but I notice on startup GRUB tells me i haven't set a valid hostname. What file contains this and shoudl I just put localhost in there?

furthermore, how do I change my DNS servers? Aren't those assigned by my ISP and on their end?
