I got impatient (Holding Debian CD in hand... hehe) and rebooted anyway, despite the umount problem. Remaining filesystems got mounted as read-only, then the reboot. Removed my install CD, selected Gentoo from my GRUB menu, and to my surprise, no kernel panics! Everything's up. Thank you guys for being a great help.

What a wonderful community.
