Hi Gents,
I'm trying to decide on which OS to install in my arcade cabinets.
I'd like to built a basic system that will use advancemenu as the only gui interface running on either a framebuffer or the SDL lib. I'd also like to use SNES,Sega Genesis,Daphne and N64 emulators.
I'd also like to run this system with a 15khz Arcade monitor, so any input on how to setup the framebuffer and SDL would be apreciated.
Has anyone in here ever done this ? if so could you please provide some notes ?
Thanks

Hmm, maybe you should have a look on Rock Linux.

why would rock linux be suitable for arcade machines, its still a source-based thing
i think you should get a linux similar to slackware - not too fat, stable, easily customizable, and not too hard to install packages (IMO) |

Hm I was thinking of a build-once, run forever setup.
And this is what rock linux does a great job at.
Configure it, compile it, stick it in the case and forget it.
Why would you want to add packages later, provided it works? _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

So Far I have a base system with:
radeon framebuffer - sdllib - svgalib
Advancemenu works on svgalib but I get a back and the screen hangs when usind SDL, well everything hangs when I use sdl.
Advancemame works with svgalib
compiled snes9x, znesx, fceulra-sdl, dgen-sdl, daphne, zinc and modeler.
I'm really having a problem getting sdl working. I'm not sure what's going on there. All I get is a black/hung screen.
I'll keep you guys posted

Hello all
I'm currently using xmame on a 15Khz arcade monitor, but performances are not good and i try to make advancemame wor on it . I see you succeeded in making framebuffer & svgalib work.
Could you tell us what mode you are using to make radeonfb work @15khz ?
Another thing. I can't get svgalib_helper module to get loaded. it complains about a
svgalib_helper: Unknown symbol devfs_mk_symlink. I applyed the corrections mentioned in bugzilla, but problem is still there.
My kernel is gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.11-r8.

There's a website by someone who converted an arcade machine to a PC running MAME on Linux, driving the original 15kHz monitor. He was about to start converting a second machine using framebuffer modes to make 15kHz modes.
The site hasn't been updated for a year, but it might be worth e-mailing this guy for further info.

Any version of Linux will work fine. I'm currently building MAME cabinets using Gentoo and Slackware. No problems with either.
If you want 15KHz arcade monitors, the best option is either FBDev or SVGALib, and team them up with AdvanceMAME. Both are documented well on these two sites, which are two of the best for MAME/Linux:
