Working with linux for the 1st time. I'm at the very beginning of the installation where you connect to a mirror to download a stage (I'm using minimal installation LiveCD). I can not connnect to the internet. I get this after running net-setup eth0 and choosing wired and auto DHCP (and attempting everything in the gentoo handbook and searching the forum):

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:F4:15:11:6F
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:8 errirs:0 dropped:0 overruns: 0 frame:0
TX packets:8 errirs:0 dropped:0 overruns: 0 frame:0
collisions: 0 rxqueuelen:0
RX bytes: 592 (592.0 b) TX bytes: 592 (592.0 b)

lo
Link encap: local loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:8 errirs:0 dropped:0 overruns: 0 frame:0
TX packets:8 errirs:0 dropped:0 overruns: 0 frame:0
collisions: 0 rxqueuelen:0
RX bytes: 592 (592.0 b) TX bytes: 592 (592.0 b)

I can't connect to anything using wget or links, etc. It either says unknown host or temporary failure in name resolustion.

I have comcast cable connection, linksys router, and the ethernet adapter is the Realtek 8139 Fast Ethernet NIC.

Keep in mind, I'm new to this so maybe I didn't do something correctly.

Thanks everyone

Hmmm... do you have firewire, by any chance? If so, your firewire card may be masquerading as an ethernet card, while your real ethernet card is eth1. Try net-setup eth1 to see if I'm anywhere near right. :)

Do firewire cards have MAC addresses though? It seems like it found a valid network card. Try a different cable and check to see if the cables are securely plugged in, check to see if the router is on and set up for DHCP. Check all of the obvious problems, not to be an @$$ but I hope it is something simple like that.

Aha!! I thought it might be. The card was being detected, mac address and all, so it must have been something simple outside the computer itself, most likely a cable. I had the same problem in an install, embarassed the hell out of me that I overlooked something so simple. Anyway glad that's all it was, easy problem to fix. Remeber to append [SOLVED] to the topic of you first post.
