root and default user

Hi everyone.

I´ve been thinking about where in the linux-dists the root-user i set up (and the default-user in live cd:s, like Knoppix).
For example if I in theory would like to change the name of the user ROOT to something else.
Is it in the kernel or?

Sure, I´m a noob, but i´ve searched google and did´t find any answers there. So I´m hoping that someone here knows something about it.

it's all in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
