There are always alternatives with ePSXe. Me I use it in windows, but I do know that it's the same on both ends: ePSXe has a sleugh of configurable plugins. If one doesn't work for your, find another and test it! ;)

Is the sound choppy all the time or just when it plays movies? And does it happen in any particular games?

I only have two games... Ridge Racer and Metal Gear: Solid. It's only real bad during "cut scenes" in Metal Gear. And during gameplay, normal sounds like footsteps and soliers saying stuff like, "There he is", sounds normal. Whenever it goes into cinema mode, it dounds choppy as all get out.

May have fixed it, using the OSS plug-in it's a whole lot less jumpy.

In MGS, I reduced it by setting something to APUsync in the settings (I'm using the eternal spu).

I was having a huge problem with jerky sound everywhere in Metal Gear: Solid and fixed it by downgrading the core to 1.5.2. I read somewhere it was a timing issue between the core and the sound plugin or something. As for the movies mine are still choppy. I'm using PEOPS for sound so that probably has something to do with it (but even with eternal I still needed to downgrade in order to make the rest of the game sound ok).
