First of all I know this is probably not the correct section to ask this but ... I'm just curious but why does the emerge wpa_supplicant package install the madwifi drivers? From what I have seen on the web site madwifi is not a dependency. Thanks Zarnce

AFAIK it needs the madwifi driver so it can build the driver interface
