"crypt" for passwords? -openldap? Which ebuild pro

The howto states

# Use crypt to hash the passwords
password-hash {crypt}

I get the following when I try to start slapd with it in place.

Feb 9 20:08:03 phred slapd[13530]: /etc/openldap/slapd.conf: line 12: password scheme "(crypt)" not available


which "crypt" does it want? I have tried six different crypt packages and haven't found it yet.

Works much better if I use {} to surround it instead of ().
