Can someone explain to me the purpose of arts in kde? Why does kde need its own sound daemon? What is wrong with just using alsa? (or oss)

Audio mixing. Saves you having to set up dmix in ALSA. |

Should make it easy?
How hard is it to uncheck the box for Arts in the Control Panel (Just make sure you do Root first)
I haven't gotten around to dmix yet but don't see much of a reason, if I need sound for Quake2 or something I just fire Arts back up, takes about 10 seconds ...
Kmenu -> Control Panel -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System -> Enable sound checkbox
Dmix still feels beta to me, not quite 'ready for prime time' .....
I'm still surprised the Kernel Krew allowed drivers as raw and beta as ALSA into the kernel tree, they must have REALLY felt a need to dump OSS ASAP .... don't get me wrong ALSA is a great idea and has excellent developers (Although they could use some more help on Creative stuff, it should look like the Kx Project including an internal patchbay http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/p16v.php?language=en ) but they are still going through 'growing pains' as evidenced by the changing names of card drivers and still developing support for cards like the AudigyLS ....
Unless you need extremely low latency Arts works fine and is easy to turn off and on if you know how (Remember to turn off in root 1st and leave off) |
