I've been peeking around at Tablet PC's and haven't seen much with linux in mind, and have not heard much from the Gentoo community.

Are they just tougher than Lappys to get fired up? Or are they just out of touch right now? I might be out to get a new lappy/tablet pc in the coming months and would like some input.

Thanks much,
Jusin

Hey,

I have Acer 302MXi tablet pc and its running gentoo without a single problem.
The only thing I cannot get to work is sowtware suspend, but thats mainly becouse I want fbsplash - (2.6.10) and I can find swsup2 only for 2.6.11 so for now it's one or the other for me.
I'm going to have to play witch failing kernel patches manualy and see if it can be done soon, I'll post some info if I succed.
Screen rotation is also problematic - make sure your X driver supports it. Of course there is always hope - mine doesn't (i810) but I got it to work by some very nasty hacking in xorg sources ;)

I've also heard some rumors about HP TC1000 running linux, but I cant help you there as I'm not sure about it.

Basicaly though it's smooth... and yes oh so cool :)

Think I might buy local, so if it doesn't work I can take it back (Working around that darn Windows tax SUCKS anyhow).

I'll need the pen for sure, since I do graphics quite a bit (Well, not for the last few months, but still, I make prictures).

Off to scope some Tablets (Acer is one I was eyeballing anyhow). But since there are a couple games I enjoy I'm still a little shy about a tablet).

Cheers,
Justin

I'm running Gentoo on a Fujitsu-Siemens LIFEBOOK T3010 with almost everything working.

Pen support is no problem, due to the linuxwacom driver (http://linuxwacom.sf.net - it's in portage too).

The touchpad works just like a mouse. There's a synaptics driver too, but I think it requires some kernel patches, that I haven't had time to look into, yet.

Wifi is no problem either thanks to either NDISwrapper or the ipw2100/ipw2200 driver. I've used both of the latter (with great success) as I've replaced the ipw2100 miniPCI card with a ipw2200 ditto.

As for screen rotation, I'm looking into the Kdrive Xserver, thats supposed to be able to do it on the fly. I still have to investigate further though.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: both NDISwrapper and the ipw2x00 drivers are in portage as well...

Just to revive an old thread, I have a few comments.

I've just stumbled across this:
Quote:
RandR

The X Resize, Rotate and Refresh Rate extension has a few details left. RandR provides facilities for resize, rotation, and refresh rate changing of X screens. This is needed for good support on laptops, for migration of applications, and for dynamic changes of depths. A version without rotation support is in XFree86; Kdrive has full support. We hope/expect that only upward comptible changes, if any, will be needed from here on out, but there is insufficient implementation experience to claim that incompatible change would never occur.

Source: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/FreedesktopProjects

So screen rotation IS supported in Kdrive, and not (yet) in Xorg.

Furthermore the Synaptics driver no longer requires any kernel patches as they have become part of the kernel as of 2.6.11. (Sorry, no link, so you'll just have to trust me on this one.)
