|
|
I have a Radeon 9250 PCI card in my PC.
After several hours of searching, I managed to get the x11-drm (CVS-version) working (ie. 3d-accel./DRI).
So I thought: how about the new ati-drivers?
After some work I got this in my Xorg-log:
Code: |
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version matches driver.
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Build Time Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel UTS_RELEASE: 2.6.9-nitro1jman-compile-udev-
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel MODVERSIONS: no
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel __SMP__: no
(II) fglrx(0): Build-Kernel PAGE_SIZE: 0x1000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] register handle = 0xc0000000
|
Now comes the fun part:
Code: |
(EE) fglrx(0): PCI cards not yet supported
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xce87b000 at 0xb7d17000
|
So it seems PCI-cards and ati-drivers do not play well together!
I realise of course that pci-bus gfx-cards are not state-of-the-art nor too widespread anymore (I guess), but it would still have been nice to use the ati-drivers (I read somewhere, that they support more features and are faster).
Anyways, I'd just like to present my findings to see if others have made the ati/pci-combo work. |

Hmm, I had always though PCI cards were supported, but it doesn't look like it from your log. There are certainly some other people here who have been trying to get PCI cards to work with the ati-drivers without success, and without getting that rather explicit error message. Are you using the 8.8.25 driver version? Can you post your whole log somwhere? _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

Well, there are several issues with the ati-drivers for r300 and newer cards. If I were you I'd stick to the open source drivers. At least these work for you. |

Yup.
The log:
http://www.jel-lej.dk/temp/Xorg.0.log
My Xorg-config
http://www.jel-lej.dk/temp/XF86config
The config file was created using fglrxconfig and adjusted afterwards. In particular I put in the option:
Code: | Option "ForcePCIMode" "true" |
If this option is not present, I get no warnings of missing PCI support. |

Thanks for posting that, I didn't think the fglrx driver would recognise the ForcePCIMode option. If you remove that, what do you get in the log instead of the PCI error? The other people I've seen using PCI cards usually get AGP errors instead.
As Ritman said, I think you're better off using the radeon driver. The fglrx driver may be slightly faster on some setups, but I doubt the differences are very noticeable. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

I am using xorg-x11 version 6.8-r4, ati-drivers 8.8.25-r3 and ati-drivers-extra 8.8.25 (use need to pass ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"). Anyway, my biggest problem was getting dual head working. I followed the instructions for ATI cards that can be found on the gentoo-wiki website.
If you like I can post my xorg.conf... |

I had to give up on the ati drivers, fglrx wouldnt load due to a missing symbol in my kernel. I changed the kernel and got limited functionality (Mesa drivers only)
Switched to radeon drivers and I am VERY pleased. the new MergedFB provides the best of xinerama AND the best of clone displays.
The amd64 with 2.6 kernel kinda forced this decision. |
