Hello,
my boss is going to buy a new server computer with amd64 and i would like to install gentoo on it (actually our server, axp 2800+, runs debian) and so i would like to know how is the suport for most aplication like X aplications.
Are there critical packages that doesnt run on it?

is there any diference about binary formats? I ask this because we meteorological data from IRI and they have an option when you are downloading binary data of: little endian and big endian. For our actual server we use little endian and for one sparc we have we use big endian. Does this change too? would ive diferent definitions like size of floats, integers, ...?

depends I guess, but I haven't found one for my personal and work related use.

x86_64 is little endian, but I have some files (ESRI shapefiles) which actually have mixed byte order (read - obfuscation) and I can read them. In this case, its the software that counts.

Yes, if you compile using the 64 bit glibc. One nice feature of the amd64 and gentoo is the ability to both compile and run in 32 bit mode. In fact, I can chroot into a nfs mounted p4 and build 32 bit packages which then run on my amd64. Thats neato.

Good luck

hmmm

i dint understand well the last part.
glibc works at same time in 32 bit and 64?
Like, if i compile all in 64 bits (i think this give more performance, doesnt it?) i still can compile and run programs that were maden for a 32 bits computer? using this types sizes expecifications?

other question ive is related to the PCI-E and SLI technologies, are they suported in linux? I ask this because i see a agpgart module in the kernel, but ive never saw a pci-e one...

thanks for atention :)
