Hello,
I'm using Gentoo for a few weeks now and I'm really happy I took the time to set up this great distro. Almost everything is running, the only thing that I really can't get to work is Ximian Evolution 1.0.8. I can receive email, but can't send. Evolutions gives me the following error message while trying to sent an email with subject 'test' to my hotmail address:
Error while 'sending '"test"':
RCPT TO response error: User not local; please try <forward-path>: mail not sent
If I send the email to the address I send it from it's working, but I can't send to other emailadresses.
I couldn't find the documentation for evolution, not on my system, not on their homepage. Maybe someone can help me? I guess it has to do with permissions, I'm using evolution logged in as root.
Thanks,
Maarten. |

hi,
why are you running evolution as root ????
you can configure two different mechanims for sending e-mail. use your local mta (sendmail) or drop your mail off to some smart relay on the net (smtp host)
i agree, there is not much documentation for evolution on the usual places, but it has a help system ![Smile :-)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

hi,
I was running as root because I installed it as root and wanted to test it, would probably be bether to do that as a normal user.
I wished I could read the help section, but it simply doesn't work
Nothing happens when I click on Help in evolutions menubar, I don't even get an error message....
My email account has an SMTP server, without authentification and that's how I configured my account. Still I'm getting that error message about non-local addresses... |

Hello,
Problem is solved, there was nothing wrong with evolution, nothing with my smtp settings, it was a strange thing with the cable. I have to use the mail server of the cable company instead of the smtp of my email-provider. I don't get that, but it works.

Most companies don't like external users sending mail through their servers, since spammers use techniques like that and they heavily load down mail servers.
So ISPs setup outgoing mail servers for their customers. If you want to "appear" to come from the other location, change your Reply-To and/or your From address in evolution.
