I have P4-2.4 GHz, 512 MB Ram system, I tried the minimal installation media.
Till the mirrorselecting everything went well. It failed, as they say it might, i chrooted and it returned silently, but when i tried to env-update it first said that in make.conf '=' character cannot be where it was in "GENTOO_MIRRORS=". I wiped off the lines starting from the "GENTOO_MIRRORS=" and tried again.
The problem is in both cases i donot have a command to reach the internet to read the handbook. But emerge just works fine, meaning my connection was properly established. Besides i'm sure i was'nt gonna have many must tools afterwards, because the number of available commands dropped from about 860 to about 300.
What may cause such a restricted environment, should i update the make.conf.example and save it as make.conf -just an idea-? Or was i on the right track?

Any help???

Can you cut-and-paste your exact GENTOO_MIRRORS line? It sounds like there is a simple typo in that line. The format should look like this
Code:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://server1.com  http://server2.com  ftp://server3.com/pub/linux/gentoo"

it is not certainly like that because it was in binary format.
I mean GENTOO_MIRRORS=/*unprintable charaters*/.

If it is connecting to the internet
Also you do not need Gentoo-Mirrors, so Delete it

As i said in my first message, i deleted the line containing "GENTOO_MIRRORS=" and tried to env-update again.

But it differred nothing. Still i was not able use any of the browsing command, i mean that i was able to connect internet via emerge command(i know this because i afterwards did "emerge --sync"), but i have no command like links, links2, lynx.. and so on.

Although I am not sure, I strongly believe that it was the env-update who failed.

But so far i'am not able to realise why it failed, any suggestions?

By the way in case of my situation, is there a possibility that i won't do the steps before the chrooting when i try reinstallation?
