Hello,
i've got the following problem: I tried to install Gentoo 2004.3 r1 from the minimal LiveCD but everytime i boot the network is not ready.
I've got the National Semiconductor Corp. DP83815/816 network card.
At bootscreen stands eth0 card found. Search for dhcp...
but with lsmod the module natsemi is active. it is the right module i know from internet but i can't ping someone. If it is configured with dhcp the message is: network is unreachable
If it is configured with static ip there comes the following message: destination host is unreachable.
If i run ifconfig with configured dhcp eth0 has been found only sometimes.
If i run ifconfig with static ip eth0 has been found and it seems to be active.
I take the cable away and the message "eth0: link down" comes. I put the cable back: "eth0: link up". So i think the card and the module work well but i get no connection to someone in the network.
Before i have tried Gentoo i had used Suse Linux and everything with the networkcard works well. At Windows the card works well, too.
Is it a hardware problem or is the configuration bad?
Thank you for helping... |

Hello Gottxxc,
We share the same problem. I am trying to install Gentoo on an HP compaq nx9010. There is a post in the forum indicating that somebody succeeded in configuring this device. Unfortunately there is no detail.
I modprobed the "natsemi" module but I am still unable to ping externally.
Is there a solution?
My best,
T. |

Hello,
Yesterday I was installing with Gentoo_2004-2 LiveCD.
Today I tried 2004-3 LiveCD.
gentoo nodhcp dokeymap works well but even if the natsemi module is loaded automatically (a serious improvment with respect to 2004-2) I cannot ping externally.
Same observations than reported by Gottxxc.
[The new Knoppix (found in PC Welt) does not load natsemi automatically. But a manual config via ifconfig, route and edition of /etc/resolconf resolved the problem.
Is there a specific gentoo problem?]
Just for information, I tried to configure everything manually on gentoo.
/sbin/ifconfig lo down
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
/sbin/ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.12 broadcast 192.168.1..255 netmask 255.255.255.0
/sbin/route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 lo
/sbin/route add -net 192.168.1.12 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
/sbin/route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0
The system hangs up on /sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
Any idea to circumvent the problem, ???

FIXED for me at least as far as the ethernet card is fixed.
I used a Gentoo_2004.0 Live CD.
With gentoo dokeymap nodhcp the system does not hang up on ieee1394, the ethernet card is identified and the natsemi module loaded automatically.
A ping -c 5 www.yahoo.fr works.
By the way, DNS resolution was inefficient on HP Compaq nx9010 with Gentoo_2004.3 LiveCD.
My very best,

Hi,
i cannot relsolve this problem. I run newest Knoppix LiveCD and newest Suse Linux LiveDVD and the networkcard run without configuration
But everytime i start gentoo 2004.3 r1 the problem is there. No ping to external network, i haven't tried to internet because i have to build a connection via pptp. So i need the networkcard running.
I can't ping someone in the network.

So, i've now tried Gentoo 2004.1 and 2004.2 too.
Both work without making problems. Perhaps it is only the 2004.3 which has problems with the natsemi module...
Thank you for helping tlepo! |
