i would be willing to test gentoo on my ALphaPC 164LX

I read on alphalinux.org that someone ported gentoo to alphas. But i cant find instructions or cd images anywhere ;( so i guess i'll have to wait!

i think i will wait. im kinda new to that. i have freebsd running on my alpha. so for now its ok.

I was running FreeBSD 4.6 on my alpha for about a year. It was ok, but frankly, all the newest technology is being pushed into Linux. Linux has an array of superb filesystems to choose from, as well as EVMS, not to forget the Linux LVM, RAID, etc. Plus I think the ports system under FreeBSD is ok, but portage is simply much easier to use. And my system is SMP, so I was looking forward to FreeBSD 5.0, but really... I feel more at home w/Linux. And although the source code for FreeBSD is more elegant, and pleasant to read, because it all fits together so nicely... device drivers and all, but Linux has the technologies I am interested in. FreeBSD is becoming a hobbyist's OS to me. It's reliable, but unfortunately falling behind on the progression curve. I probobly shouldn't even mention that Linux is GNU, while *BSD is "do whatever you want w/me, I don't care," and in this world I have complete freedom to be an idealist however I please, and I refuse to let the grease-slathered mongrels use my code in unsanitary ways, so I think it's ok to say I require whoever uses my code to publish their changes if they're going to sell it, at least until the world is flooded a high-quality operating system instead of something that wants little to do w/you except for your money and your slack-jaw drool. FreeBSD developers are truly open, and free w/their source, but Linux is a force because it uses a license that requires that users contribute. And Gentoo gives you complete control over what's installed, and how to install new things, etc. It's really a thing of beauty.

i dont really like freebsd myself. But its either that, or openbsd with i think is even worst if you dont have extensive knowledge of BSD. I know rh also has a port for alpha, but i dont really like that distro. So i'll stick to FreeBSD until gentoo 1.4 release comes out with full support for alphas.
