Good advice is priceless. Thanks jake.
I'll take a look at the 2.6.13-2 broken-out patches and probably make an ebuild labeled "experimental", "unstable", or something like that. |

anyone have any idea how long it normally takes namesys to release the reiser4 patch after a new kernel release? ive got reiser4-gentoo-sources-2.6.14.ebuild made, but it wont work until they release the patch. |

Seems that some of the outstanding Reiser4 issues have been resolved.
I am using it now with gentoo-sources 2.6.14, having kernel stack size set to 4kb and zlib compiled in as a module. So far no problems encountered... |

Is it just me or is reiser4 now horribly broken again on the AMD64?
2.6.12-r10 with reiser4 - perfect no problems
2.6.13-r5 with reiser4 - can't even mount without an error from somewhere within the reiser4 code
2.6.14-r2 with reiser4 - got as far as mounting the fs, but as soon as I try a directory listing with ls - kernel error something to do with SMP
It's probably because I've got SMP enabled for my dual core
I'm aware that they've been fiddling with the code / removing stuff etc to try and get it into mainline
but I can only figure that something in the gentoo patchset is interfering in some way, although I think I'll confirm that by trying vanilla to see what happens
the current namesys patches apply fine against the genttoo sources after the gentoo patchset
but as soon as you try to mount anything or access anything, it's all completly goosed |

try starting with a fresh config, or possibly make oldconfig. your old config has lots of stuff enabled that no longer exists in 2.6.14 (ie devfs) |

Amazing.
I checked out the wiki page and i'm happy to see that people are stepping up and taking ownership of the project and working on it. Thank you all. Feel free to add yourself to the credits.. or I might be forced to!
Anyway, I'll be in and out - Hopefully I'll be able to make some contributions.
Happy Holidays |

reading through the namesys mailing list at the moment
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=reiserfs&r=1&w=2
there seem to have been a few other non-amd64 related issues including sync problems, lockups with mmapped files etc
the patches against 2.6.12 seem to be the last set that were stable enough for general use for me
I think there have been some fixes to the latest cutting edge versions perhaps 2.6.14-mm2
but I'll be waiting a while for things to stabilise before trying a new kernel version (perhaps 2.6.15 if R4 finally makes it into the mainline kernel) |

Hi all,
I have posted this in the reiser4 dev group and now I know that my mm-sources kernel panics without reiser4 in it.
how does one go about fixing it?
---- quoting more details ----

I see nothing about reiser4 there. Would you please try to turn reiser4 off in
kernel configuration and try to boot off that kernel?

I've been using the 2.6.15-1 patch successfully on vanilla 2.6.15.1 for 3 days on amd64, including a few hours of stress testing, but if VS says be careful, keep backups! |

Thanks. Didn't realise. Maybe I should put that on the wiki...
btw. Did you have to fsck the partition to update the "substantial changes" or did you just use the new kernel? _________________ The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. |

I think "substantial changes" just refers to the kernel code. As far as I know both the format and plugin set are the same as before. I would think if anything more was required VS would have said something.

Yes!
I am using it on a raid now - Linux software based raid using raidtools.
I have also used dmraid for silicon image raid with dual/boot winxp but changed to linux based due to lack of configurability. _________________ The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. |

Is it still necessary to use 8k stack size, instead of the default 4k stack size? |

No. That has been fixed. AFAIK. I should really fix the wiki, but no time atm.
I don't even know if you can set 4k stacks in the kernel anymore. _________________ The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. |
