|

The 1.4_rc2 CD will not boot due to my HPT372 RAID controller;
this is a known issue and will not be solved in the near future. Booting
itself isn't actually the problem -- the RAID driver is broken in newer
kernels.
I currently dual boot Gentoo-1.2 and a different (ahem) "non-Linux" OS,
both booting directly from the RAID. Disabling RAID is not an option;
adding a non-RAID hard drive from which to boot is also not an option.
So this leaves me with either upgrading my 1.2 install (an apparently
tricky process which I don't wish to do) or booting from the 1.2 CD
then popping in the 1.4 CD. Will the latter work?
Or perhaps I can find out how to create a 1.4 install CD which
runs a 2.4.19-gentoo-r7 kernel?

I found it easier to update using the scripts or rac's hybrid guide, but there's absolutely nothing to be said against your method of booting the 1.2 CD and then install a 1.4-rcN tarball of the stage you choose. I have been doing that ever since the international keyboard layout support was broken in the 1.4 CD, and people with PCMCIA have been known to do likewise. |

The worst that could happen is that I spend an extrodinary amount of
time doing all the stages only to find out there is some unforseen
problem caused by booting from the 1.2 CD when the 1.4 CD was
expected. I posted to find out if there is a known problem with this.
Assuming you are not implying my time is worthless, no offense taken. |

Yes, you can boot the 1.2 CD and then wget the 1.4rcN tarbz from the net and install with it. Its how I did mine, because I don't like how the livecds work _________________ (Insert witty and shady signature here) |

Same here.
Works fine, even with a boot floppy. |
