|
|
Hi All,
I got a couple questions about hardware best for servers runnig Gentoo Linux.
I plan to buy 4-6 boxes in rack for such a purposes:
1. firewall + apache/mysql/php + squid >= router
2. PDC (about 150 users)SAMBA/LDAP/CUPS
3. BDC
4. Server platform for System to Manage all things in firm
5. firewall + pdc
I want to use hardware RAID 1 or 5.
Maybe one more, but it also depends on costs
What would you advise me to buy. I would be grateful for any piece of advise.
Thx in advance.

www.sun.com
www.ebay.com, search for "sun ultrasparc"
... if you have a "legacy" instinct to cling to the x86 world,
just stay as far away from intel/dell as you can and you will be fine ... _________________ -Tim Smith |

I'd say to grab an Athlon64 processor. If you get a mid-range one, you're not going to be taxing it too heavilly with anything you describe there.
If you're spending someone else's money or you're really serious about doing database stuff, you may want to spring for a pair of low-end Opterons: the parallel processing will really help out.
As for the rest, it's all a matter of how much money you have to blow on this thing and how much usage you're going to be doing. |
