Although I have found many posts about this combination on this forum, I still have a "problem".
I have an NF7-S motherboard and I am using the latest stable gentoo-dev-sources kernel. ALSA is compiled in the kernel.
The relevant part of my kernel configuration file is as follows:
Code: |

/etc/modules.d/alsa is as follows (and the relevant part of /etc/modules.conf is identical):
Code: |
# Alsa 0.9.X kernel modules' configuration file.

## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)

## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.

alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

Starting alsasound (during boot or manually) gives the following error message:
Quote: | * Loading ALSA modules ...
* Loading: snd-card-0 ...
FATAL: Module snd_intel8x0 not found. [!!]
[ok]
* Restoring Mixer Levels ... [ok] |
"alsaconf" does not find any soundcard.
Running "alsamixer" gives me a control panel for "card: Nvidia nForce2" "chip: Realtek ALC650F" and "amixer" gives me the usual series of parameters.
Rhythmbox works without problems.
XMMS works when I configure the ALSA driver to use "default" or "hw:0,0" as audio device.
MPlayer also works fine.
Hence why the error message when starting alsasound and why is my "soundcard" not found by alsaconf?
Trying to understand - any help appreciated.

The alsasound init script assumes you have ALSA built as modules. You have the support built into the kernel, hence the script fails when it tries to load the non-existant modules.
In my humble opinion, drivers such as ALSA are easiest handled when being built as modules. This gives you the opportunity to pass options to them as you load them (either manually or in scripts) while in most cases you will have to pass the options to the kernel at boot-time (using the bootloader) if you build them into the kernel. This is just personal preference though.

Correct.
Keeping things simply (I am doing nothing fancy with alsa), I just removed /etc/init.d/alsa, ran "modules-update" and restarted alsasound.
No error message anymore and sound works as before.
Thanks for the explanation.
