Uh... more information would be nice.

What kind of hardware? IDE, USB, Firewire, SCSI?
Software? SCSI emulation on or off? What frontend are you using? Have you tried using cdrecord without a frontend?

Any error messages? Anything odd in dmesg?

What kernel and version are you using? Have you tried burning as root? Does hdparm really confirm DMA is on?

I don't mean to be rude. You are lucky to get an answer without providing more information. Gentoo is knows for it's helpful forums, but the person asking for help needs to do their part and provide as much relevant information as they can.

More information:
IDE DVD/CDRW drive: TEAC DW-554G (i suppose)
kernel 2.6.10-nitro4
no frontend, just cdrecord, cdda2wav etc

It seems that it simply doesn't want to use DMA, but when i switch it on by running hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc, the situation doesn't get other

First, I'd like to see your cdrecord command line options.

Another thing, you may want to consider trying another kernel. Specifically one without the staircase scheduler. gentoo-dev-sources would be fine. I've had some strange and similar issues with certain versions of nitro/staircase. I've since stopped using it.
