Hi - are there any basic performance tweaks that you can deploy from this basic starting point?:
Universal live cd
Stage 3
Portage from cd
gentoo-dev-sources
Manual kernel compile
Post install:
Packages cd - emerged kdelibs arts kdebase
(& couple of other things like iptables & firefox from the net)

hdparm (for disk performance)...
Try Code: | # hdparm -Tt /dev/hdX | (where hdX = your disk)
This should list some figures for you to consider Code: | Timing cached reads: 2188 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1092.53 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 210 MB in 3.02 seconds = 69.57 MB/sec | Also check whether DMA is enabled.. in most modern systems, this greatly improves disk performance... _________________ All reality is the construct of the observer.
