Well, first of all, I hope this is being posted in the right location.
Here's my problem, and I have swept the entire internet looking for a solution, and didn't even come close to finding one.
I have a Windows XP desktop (gaming machine), that has a HP Deskjet 648C. It's shared. There are folders shared. I can see the folders from my Gentoo based laptop. But.....after following all tutorials on how to set up samba/cups to print off of a Windows printer from Gentoo, I keep getting this error "client-error-not-possible" (in http://localhost:631). All my print jobs end up in completed as 'aborted'. I figured hey, maybe the test file is a hoax. So I tried printing an actual document, still no good. I made sure all correct ip's and domain's and what not are in /etc/hosts. Both computers are in the same workgroup. The firewall is disabled on my winxp machine (simmer down hackers). Going nucking futs here. I'd like to stay with Gentoo - I really love it, however, if I can't even do something as simple as print off of a network computer, it's a waste of my time. Setting up the laptop as the server is not an option.
Please help!! |

Unfortunately CUPS - not Gentoo - can be a real pain to configure... I can just give you tips, not real solution.
If you prefer gui and use Gnome, you could try emerging : net-print/gnome-cups-manager.
The error you mention is I think when you don't have permission to access the cups server. Check how you set the admin password. Close your browser to reset cookies problem for authentification. When you browse to the cups server http://localhost:631, go to admin, it should ask for login and password. If not it won't let you do any modifications and give that client forbidden error. _________________ "May God stands between you and harm in all the empty places where you must walk" - Babylon 5 |
